Best Games of 1991

Honorable Mentions – T.J.: Mega Man 4, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, Lemmings

Honorable Mentions – D.M.: Sonic the Hedgehog, Civilization, Chuck Yeager’s Air Combat

The results are in from 1991, and here are the current standings for the Best Games-lympics, the data portion of this column! Each game we feature on these lists will earn a number of points for its platform, developer, and country of origin (with #1s earning 10 points, all the way down to #10s earning 1 point and Honorable Mentions earning half a point), and we’ll keep you updated on the standings each week!

The NES remains unassailable even into the twilight years of its life cycle. But the SNES and PC are hard on its heels, tied for second place and representing its only serious challengers so far. Oh, and the PC has at last topped T.J.’s list. It’s unlikely to ever be unseated from that spot at this point.

Nintendo continues to slaughter the competition across the board, while Capcom pulls into a somewhat unexpected second place. New faces like Sonic Team and Microprose emerge to knock some old-timers off the list… but how long will they, themselves, be able to maintain a Top 10 spot?

Nation Wars

T.J.’s Picks D.M.’s Picks Combined
1. Japan: 85.5 pts.
(Last Week: 1 –)2. US: 47.5 pts.
(Last Week: 2 –)3. UK: 6.5 pts.
(Last Week: 3 –)
1. Japan: 110 pts.
(Last Week: 1 –)2. US: 28.5 pts.
(Last Week: 2 –)
1. Japan: 195.5 pts.
(Last Week: 1 –)2. US: 76 pts.
(Last Week: 2 –)3. UK: 6.5 pts.
(Last Week: 3 –)

The points totals have changed, but the standings show no sign of budging. Japan’s lead is as wide as ever, and no one comes close to challenging the US’s #2 spot. Can such head starts truly be overcome by the rest of the world’s game-developing nations, or will this devolve into a battle for the bronze?
