Reigning Champion: NES
Weeks at #1: 4

Our reigning champion, the NES, is finally facing its swan song. It managed to hold onto the #1 slot despite earning no new points for the first week since this series began, and the PC is breathing down its neck at only two points behind. The arcade continues to make a strong showing, but can they survive as the market shifts more and more toward home consoles in the coming years?

Reigning Champion: Nintendo
Weeks at #1: 4

Despite earning next to no points for 1992, Nintendo still seems untouchable. A tightly-knit pack of secondary contenders has formed, however, in the form of LucasArts, Capcom, and Square. id and Sonic Team are seeing their stars on the rise, while some of the old soldiers have been knocked off the list or are in danger of being so.

Nation Wars

3. UK: 6.5 pts.

Gold: Japan, Silver: United States, Bronze: United Kingdom

Japan’s seemingly untouchable lead is shrinking somewhat – especially as a proportion of the total points earned. Even still, they don’t seem likely to give up the gold medal position any time soon.

Check back next week for the Best Games of 1993!
