Reigning Champion: PC
Weeks at #1: 3

The SNES has finally unseated its predecessor on the combined list, making it the best Nintendo and the best game console overall up to this point. Now it’s up to the N64 and the newly-minted Playstation to attempt to knock off its crown. The arcade makes yet another comeback, proving that even in a world of personal computers and home systems, it’s not going anywhere any time soon.

Reigning Champion: Nintendo
Weeks at #1: 7

Square cements its strong second position, even coming within spitting distance of Nintendo on D.M.’s personal list. If anyone’s ever going to unseat our long-reigning champion, the data up to 1995 seems to point in their direction. At the same time, Blizzard’s storied rise is just beginning and Midway has made a big comeback – though it may be their last.

Gold: United States, Silver: Japan, Bronze: France

It’s an exciting week in the Nation Wars! The United States has finally overcome Japan to take gold medal position, and we have our first new challenger since the series started! Thanks to Rayman and Ubisoft (who didn’t earn enough points for contention on the Developer Top 10… yet), France has pushed the UK off the medal podium with their opening enfilade. The diversity of nations making great games is only going to increase from here, so watch this space!

Check back next week for the Best Games of 1996!
