Loresworn Games of the Year: Games We Didn’t Get To in 2017 (But Wish We Had)

It’s Loresworn Games of the Year Week! Today, we run through the games you won’t see on our Games of the Year list tomorrow… but we think probably would have made it if not for the fact that we just didn’t get around to them. 2017 had so many great games that slipped by it’s almost embarrassing, so the least we can do is give them a nod here. We hope to loop back around and tackle some of these next year.

The World of Apocalypse 1780: Introduction

Apocalypse 1780 is a post-apocalyptic, alternate history universe created by T.J. Hafer. It separates from our timeline in October of 1780, in the middle of the American Revolution, when the largest supervolcano eruption in human history takes place somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The particulate material thrown into the atmosphere causes an unprecedented, brutal cooling period known as the 12-Year Winter. Combined with pandemic disease outbreaks and the breakdown of civilization, this climate change results in the deaths of more than 750 million of the Earth’s 800 million inhabitants.

Death By Paper Cuts

Five years.

Five years.

Five years since Ava had seen the ad in the paper. Five years since she’d written – and rewritten, and rewritten – her resume. Five years since she’d mustered the entirety of her hopes, her dreams, her ambitions to throw at this one job.

“Your first job is where it all starts,” her father had said to her once. “It’s gotta be at the right place. It’s gotta be under the right people. The first rung in the ladder. Get on it and start climbing.”

Best Games of 1998

We’re back with the eighth entry in our series on the best games of all time! Since Loresworn has only been around since 2015, but D.M. and T.J. have been having opinions about games much longer than that, we’re embarking on a journey through every year from 1980 to the present, listing our favorite games that came out each year. Every week we’ll be discussing a specific year, listing what we think are the five best games from that year. At the end of this saga, we will look over all the games from each year to create Top 25 Games of All Time lists for each of us, and a grand Top 100 Games of All Time to stand as Loresworn’s final word on the subject!

Stellaris Multiplayer: The Rise and Fall of the Loreswarm

What is victory? A pertinent question I asked the webcam as twilight had come for my warmongering, insectoid empire. By the common sense definition, we were not among the victors in this 20+ player, interstellar brawl taking place at an array of computers in Old Windsor, England – the first of its kind involving players outside of Paradox. As with so many great empires, The Loreswarm had undergone a meteoric rise before collapsing into so much space dust. But as the overmind of the chittering masses, I chose to focus on other standards of victory. The mark we left on the galaxy would not soon be erased.

Galactic Chronicles Preview: The United Global Alliance

“The time has come to make good on the promises of our forebears. John F. Kennedy once said something about doing things not because they are easy, but specifically because they are hard. My father once said that the only things worth doing tend to be tough. That speaks to me. It should speak to you too. What we’re doing isn’t just the next great leap for mankind, for humanity: It’s also the toughest thing we’ve ever undertaken. Putting aside our differences, surviving our conflicts, saving our planet, all those challenges pale in comparison to accessing the final frontier stretched before us. But our future is beyond that event horizon. The future of humanity. It won’t be easy. But that’s why we’re doing it. Mankind has leveled up, and it’s up to us to prove we’re up to a whole new level of challenge. To your posts.”

-Siegfried Hoffman, the first Alliance captain to ever take a crew beyond Sol

Galactic Chronicles Preview: The Athirova

“Beyond today, when this vessel breaks the atmosphere, you are all Yasha. Some have already had this caste placed upon you by the Sa-Raaya for crimes against Harmony. Others of you have chosen to sacrifice your birth caste in service to the Athirova. A Yasha is one who has lost their way. But as beings within whom Harmony and Disharmony forever struggle, you are the only Athirova fit to travel beyond our holy world and face the Disharmony that waits to be quelled between the stars. Outcastes and saviors will you be. Only the impure may purify the galaxy.”

Best Stellaris Empire Builds – Updated for Utopia!

Stellaris is still a little over a month away, but the fine folks over at the Stellaris Wiki have compiled everything we know so far about the species traits, government types, and ethos…es? Ethoi? Whatever the plural may be, we’ve used this information to create a list of the most powerful, synergistic, potentially broken empire builds you can borrow or adapt to hit the galaxy running and purge (or befriend, if that’s more your thing) the xenos.

Note: This article will be updated as traits and governments change before, at, and after release.

Crusader Kings II turns four – We’re streaming all day and giving away a copy!

Four years ago today, a little game called Crusader Kings II was released from a relatively unknown group of hardcore strategy wizards, Paradox Development Studio. Since then, it has eaten around 1000 hours of my time and become almost mythical in its countenance. To celebrate this auspicious occasion, we’ll be streaming feudal intrigue and warfare all day! We even have a copy of the game to give away if we reach a certain viewer threshold!

Stream starts at 8 a.m. PST on Twitch.tv/LoreswornOrder

Story Circle: Here There Be Monsters

This story is not like other stories. It is a fable, written by all of us… but with only limited information.

Here’s how our Story Circle works: One of us begins the story, writing a paragraph. Then we send the last sentence of that paragraph to the next person in line, and they write a paragraph. The cycle continues until we feel we are finished. Then we compile the paragraphs into one epic, inevitably disjointed story for your reading amusement. Enjoy!
