Loresworn Games of the Year: Games We Didn’t Get To in 2017 (But Wish We Had)

It’s Loresworn Games of the Year Week! Today, we run through the games you won’t see on our Games of the Year list tomorrow… but we think probably would have made it if not for the fact that we just didn’t get around to them. 2017 had so many great games that slipped by it’s almost embarrassing, so the least we can do is give them a nod here. We hope to loop back around and tackle some of these next year.

Best Games of 1998

We’re back with the eighth entry in our series on the best games of all time! Since Loresworn has only been around since 2015, but D.M. and T.J. have been having opinions about games much longer than that, we’re embarking on a journey through every year from 1980 to the present, listing our favorite games that came out each year. Every week we’ll be discussing a specific year, listing what we think are the five best games from that year. At the end of this saga, we will look over all the games from each year to create Top 25 Games of All Time lists for each of us, and a grand Top 100 Games of All Time to stand as Loresworn’s final word on the subject!

Stellaris Multiplayer: The Rise and Fall of the Loreswarm

What is victory? A pertinent question I asked the webcam as twilight had come for my warmongering, insectoid empire. By the common sense definition, we were not among the victors in this 20+ player, interstellar brawl taking place at an array of computers in Old Windsor, England – the first of its kind involving players outside of Paradox. As with so many great empires, The Loreswarm had undergone a meteoric rise before collapsing into so much space dust. But as the overmind of the chittering masses, I chose to focus on other standards of victory. The mark we left on the galaxy would not soon be erased.

Galactic Chronicles Preview: The United Global Alliance

“The time has come to make good on the promises of our forebears. John F. Kennedy once said something about doing things not because they are easy, but specifically because they are hard. My father once said that the only things worth doing tend to be tough. That speaks to me. It should speak to you too. What we’re doing isn’t just the next great leap for mankind, for humanity: It’s also the toughest thing we’ve ever undertaken. Putting aside our differences, surviving our conflicts, saving our planet, all those challenges pale in comparison to accessing the final frontier stretched before us. But our future is beyond that event horizon. The future of humanity. It won’t be easy. But that’s why we’re doing it. Mankind has leveled up, and it’s up to us to prove we’re up to a whole new level of challenge. To your posts.”

Galactic Chronicles Preview: The Athirova

“Beyond today, when this vessel breaks the atmosphere, you are all Yasha. Some have already had this caste placed upon you by the Sa-Raaya for crimes against Harmony. Others of you have chosen to sacrifice your birth caste in service to the Athirova. A Yasha is one who has lost their way. But as beings within whom Harmony and Disharmony forever struggle, you are the only Athirova fit to travel beyond our holy world and face the Disharmony that waits to be quelled between the stars. Outcastes and saviors will you be. Only the impure may purify the galaxy.”

Best Stellaris Empire Builds – Updated for Utopia!

Stellaris is still a little over a month away, but the fine folks over at the Stellaris Wiki have compiled everything we know so far about the species traits, government types, and ethos…es? Ethoi? Loresworn Review: Shadowrun Hong Kong

Harebrained Schemes has done it again. When you want a true RPG with an interesting plot and simple, fun gameplay, it can’t hurt to run the shadows.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Harebrained’s last entry in the turn based, isometric cyberpunk series was brilliant. A nice, suspenseful plot, fantastic characters, and a healthy amount of tugging on those RPG strings. It’s easily one of the best RPGs to come out in recent years. Does Hong Kong match those lofty heights? Does it exceed them?

Yes in some ways, no in others.

Loresworn Review: The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

Man, Geralt gets all the girls. Hard to resent him, though. When you live a life as bleak and bloody as his, you can’t begrudge him even a little bit of sunshine and happiness.

That’s what stands out the most as you wander around CD Projekt Red’s open world epic: the Northern Realms are not a happy place. Everywhere you look, there’s war, there’s famine, there’re monsters, and there’re angry people looking to beat you up with sharp objects because of some combination of the above. Calling The Witcher III beautiful would be only be correct aesthetically, and that’s part of what makes it such an amazing experience. Here is a fantasy world that is seriously dark, and you’ve been thrown into the middle of its darkest hour. It’s fun, but it ain’t happy.

The Order Reacts: World of Warcraft: Legion expansion announced

We’re not a news site, but we often like to react to the news around our favorite games and other media. That’s what this column is about. Today, massive Warcraft lore nerd T.J. Hafer (he’s basically second in line behind Red Shirt Guy) reacts to today’s announcement of the latest World of Warcraft expansion, Legion, at Gamescom in Germany.

The sixth expansion for World of Warcraft has been announced, and it’s focusing on the Burning Legion. Long-time Warcraft fans like myself might find this odd, considering the Legion has already been defeated in the War of the Ancients. And again in Warcraft 3. And again in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. But thanks to all the weird time travel shit that happened in Warlords of Draenor, they’re back for what Blizzard is quick to describe as their most significant invasion of Azeroth yet. Also, Illidan is back from the dead for some reason.

Yeah, Warcraft has basically turned into a comic book universe where cool characters never actually stay dead. But maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
